We thought it might be interesting to present in detail the process we go through when taking a product design from concept to finish. The See Creatures packaging and product design project is an excellent case in point. Our client presented us with sketches and ideas for a line of children's bath toys and night lights. As you can see from the four color sketches (below) that were presented to us, the ideas were pretty rough. The idea was to produce a line of foam characters with mirrors embedded in their bellies. When wet, they would stick to the wall above the tub. The night lights would simply be dimensional versions of the same characters. We'd start with the foam character mirrors and move forward from there. EXPANDING THE CONCEPT After discussing the initial concept, the first thing we did was to sharpen up a pencil and sketch out a number of ideas for creature designs. After sharing these with the client it was determined that the animals they wanted to focus on should be aquatic in nature. After all, the product name was See Creatures and they were intended for use in the tub - animals that would usually be found in (or near) the water seemed to make good sense.
Next we turned our attention to package design ideas. Early sketches show that from the start the idea was to focus on bathtime - lots of soap bubbles, nostalgic bathroom tiling, kids splashing in the tub, etc.
